  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Takes loss in bulk-relief outing

Springs (5-5) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and struck out eight without walking a batter over six innings, taking the loss Monday versus the Angels. Springs worked behind an opener for the second outing in a row, and the results have been mixed at best. He's allowed eight runs (six earned) over 12.2 innings in that span, though he also has a 15:2 K:BB across those two bulk-relief appearances. He's gone winless in five straight outings and now has a 4.64 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 64:31 K:BB through 73.2 innings over 14 appearances (12 starts) this season. Springs is tentatively scheduled for a road outing versus the Royals in his next appearance, though it's not yet clear whether he'll operate as a starter or follow an opener once again.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Slated for bulk relief versus Halos

Springs is expected to serve as the Athletics' primary pitcher in Monday's contest versus the Angels, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Grant Holman will be the team's opener, but Springs is in line to handle the bulk of the innings. It's the second straight bulk relief appearance for Springs, who allowed four runs (three earned) while striking out seven across 6.2 frames last week against the Twins.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Fans seven behind opener

Springs worked 6.2 innings in bulk relief Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out seven batters in a no-decision. Justin Sterner opened the game for the Athletics and gave up one run in one inning, and he was ultimately tagged with the loss. Springs handled a starter's workload with 106 pitches (68 strikes) after entering in the second, and he got through three scoreless frames before serving up a two-run homer to Harrison Bader in the fifth. This was by no means Springs' finest outing, but he did notch his second-highest strikeout total of the season and bounced back reasonably well after yielding six runs over two innings during his previous start. It's not clear if the lefty will continue to work behind an opener or return to a traditional starting role, but regardless he's next lined up to take the mound on the road against the Angels.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Following opener Wednesday

Springs is expected to work in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Justin Sterner in Wednesday's game against the Twins, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Springs gave up six runs on six hits and six walks in only two innings during his previous start, and the A's will now see if he can find better luck while facing the top of Minnesota's order one less time.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Roughed up for six runs in loss

Springs (5-4) took the loss against the Blue Jays on Friday, allowing six runs on six hits and six walks while striking out two over two innings. Springs was able to keep the Blue Jays off the board in the first inning, but he proceeded to yield three runs in both the second and third. He tossed 72 pitches (41 strikes) and could not escape the third inning for the second time this season (12 starts). Springs has a 4.72 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 61 innings this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, tentatively slated for next week at home against Minnesota.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Gives up two homers

Springs allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings in a no-decision Saturday versus the Phillies. Springs turned in a baseline quality start, thanks to the Phillies' first run being unearned. He also gave up solo shots to Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber later in the contest. Springs has given up eight runs (seven earned) over 30.2 innings in May, though his 20:7 K:BB is a bit underwhelming. He's now at a 3.97 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 47:23 K:BB through 59 innings over 11 starts. Springs' next outing is projected to be on the road versus the Blue Jays.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Strong start goes to waste

Springs allowed a run on two hits and struck out five without walking a batter over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Sunday. Aside from a Heliot Ramos solo shot to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Springs was nearly untouchable Sunday, though the same can't be said of the Athletics' bullpen. Springs has been fantastic in May, allowing just four runs over 24.2 innings despite a pedestrian 14:5 K:BB. This was his fifth quality start in 10 outings this season, and he's maintained a 3.91 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 41:21 K:BB over 53 innings. The southpaw's next start is projected to be at home versus the Phillies.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Excellent in win over Dodgers

Springs (5-3) allowed a run on six hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Dodgers. Springs put together his longest outing of the season and looked excellent against a tough opponent. This is the third time in nine starts he's limited an opponent to one run or less. The left-hander trimmed his ERA to 4.27 with a 1.38 WHIP and 36:21 K:BB across 46.1 innings over nine starts. Springs' performance isn't at his peak yet -- he's striking out batters at a career-worst rate (7.0 K/9), and his 4.1 BB/9 is his highest since 2019. Still, he's getting the job done despite the flaws. Springs is tentatively projected for a road start versus the Giants this weekend.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Decent in no-decision

Springs allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Tuesday. Springs gave up a run in each of the first two innings, including a solo home run to Julio Rodriguez in the opening frame. The Athletics provided a quick response each time, and Springs left with the game tied at 2-2. He wasn't all that efficient, throwing 60 of 98 pitches for strikes, but he fared well against a challenging lineup. Springs has a 4.81 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 32:19 K:BB across 39.1 innings eight starts. He's been limited to a combined 49 innings and 10 starts at the major-league level over the last two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023, so it's unclear how he'll fare over the course of a full season. Springs is tentatively scheduled for a difficult road start versus the Dodgers in his next outing.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Limits Rangers to three baserunners

Springs (4-3) earned the win against the Rangers on Thursday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one over six scoreless innings. Springs ran into a bit of trouble in the fifth inning with runners on second and third, but he struck out Tucker Barnhart to escape the frame unscathed. Springs faced the minimum number of batters in four of six innings, tossing just 68 pitches (45 strikes) while inducing 12 flyball outs. Thursday marked his third quality start of the season and second six-frame shutout. Springs is in line to face the Mariners at home next week.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Allows five earned runs in loss

Springs (3-3) took the loss Saturday against the White Sox, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. The 32-year-old southpaw was unsteady out the gate against the lowly White Sox, who managed to lace four extra-base hits (one homer and three doubles) in the first inning. Springs was unable to recover from there, but he tossed 100 total pitches to absorb innings for the bullpen. Springs has floundered in his first season with the Athletics, pitching to a 6.04 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 27:16 K:BB across 28.1 innings. He currently lines up to make his next start at Texas this upcoming week.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Cleared to start Saturday

Springs (hamstring) is listed as the Athletics' scheduled starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the White Sox in Sacramento. Springs exited in the third inning Sunday against the Brewers due to right hamstring tightness, but follow-up testing didn't turn up anything concerning. After completing his between-starts bullpen session without incident, Springs will be ready to take the hill on five days' rest. Acquired from the Rays in the offseason, Springs has gotten off to a rough start to his tenure with the Athletics, going 3-2 with a 5.64 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 8.7 K-BB% in 22.1 innings through his first five outings.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Settles in after rocky first frame

Springs (3-1) got the win Tuesday against the White Sox after giving up three runs on three hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out four. After getting off to a rocky start by allowing a three-run home run to Andrew Vaughn in the opening inning, Springs settled down to hurl four scoreless innings afterward. Springs also notably escaped a bases-loaded jam by punching out Joshua Palacios to end the third inning. The left-hander will aim to improve on his 4.50 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 20:10 K:BB through 20 innings this year in a tougher matchup in Milwaukee, which is tentatively set for this weekend.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Overcomes shaky frame for win

Springs (2-1) picked up the win in Tuesday's 10-4 victory over the Padres, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. San Diego jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the A's offense struck back for six runs against Dylan Cease in the bottom of the frame and Springs settled in once he was handed the lead. The veteran southpaw has two quality starts into his first three trips to the mound this season, and he'll take a 4.20 ERA and 16:7 K:BB through 15 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week against the White Sox.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Gives up four earned runs in loss

Springs (1-1) took the loss against the Cubs on Wednesday. He gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out three across three innings. Springs started out strong with two first-inning strikeouts, but things unravelled in the second frame when he gave up four runs, three of which came from a Seiya Suzuki home run. Springs needed 82 pitches to record just nine outs, which is a major step back from the six shutout frames he delivered in his season debut last week. The 32-year-old southpaw will look to get back in the win column in his next start, and he's lined up to face the Padres next week at home.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Fires six scoreless in A's debut

Springs (1-0) earned the win against Seattle on Friday, giving up three hits and a walk while striking out nine batters across six shutout innings. Springs did a great job showing why the Athletics were right to trade for him in the offseason, as he kept the Mariners' hitters off balance at the plate Friday and got through his six innings of work on just 83 pitches. Durability will remain a concern for the 32-year-old throughout the season due to his recent elbow issues, but he offers plenty of upside to fantasy managers when he's healthy. He's lined up to make his next start at home against the Cubs.

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: No workload restrictions

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said recently that Springs (elbow) had a "full, healthy offseason," and he does not expect the lefty's workload to be limited in 2025, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Springs threw only 16 innings in 2023 before needing Tommy John surgery and totaled 65 frames in 2024 before being shut down late in the year with left elbow fatigue. However, he was able to go through his normal offseason throwing program and will be nearly two full years removed from surgery on Opening Day. While Kotsay probably won't ride Springs too hard early in the season, he expects the southpaw to make "30-plus starts."

  • Athletics' Jeffrey Springs: Headliner in offseason swap

The Rays traded Springs and Jacob Lopez to the Athletics on Saturday in exchange for Joe Boyle, Jacob Watters, Will Simpson and a compensatory draft pick, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. After signing Luis Severino to the largest guaranteed deal in franchise history, the A's continue to invest into their rotation by acquiring Springs. The 32-year-old southpaw missed the first half of last season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery but returned to start seven games for Tampa Bay, recording a 3.27 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 33 innings. He and Severino will almost certainly slot in at the top of the Athletics' rotation, but because Springs has surpassed the 45-inning mark only once in his seven-year career, the A's may look to limit his workload in 2025.

  • Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Ruled out for rest of season

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday that Springs (elbow) is feeling better but will not return from the 15-day injured list this season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Springs landed on the IL earlier this month with left elbow fatigue, roughly six weeks after he returned to the majors following a long rehab from Tommy John surgery. While Springs' current elbow issue doesn't seem to be overly concerning, the Rays would have little to gain by rushing him back before the regular season concludes.

  • Rays' Jeffrey Springs: Out with elbow fatigue

The Rays placed Springs on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to left elbow fatigue. The left-hander lined up to take the mound early this week in Philadelphia, but he'll instead head to the IL due to the elbow issue. Springs will be eligible to return from the injured list in late September, potentially in time for a couple starts, but there's a real chance he won't return with the Rays six games back of the final wild-card spot. If he is done for the season, the 31-year-old will close the campaign with a 3.27 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB across 33 innings (seven starts).
