Diamondbacks' Aramis Garcia: Cast off 40-man roster
Arizona designated Garcia for assignment Sunday.
He'll give up his spot on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster to lefty reliever Kyle Backhus, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks called Garcia up from Reno on Saturday while top backstop Gabriel Moreno has dealt with a hand issue in recent days, but Arizona's decision to drop Garcia from the roster a day later suggests Moreno's injury isn't a concern moving forward.

The Diamondbacks selected Backhus' contract from Triple-A Reno on Sunday.
Arizona designated catcher Aramis Garcia for assignment to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Backhus, a 27-year-old lefty reliever who will be making his MLB debut when he gets into a game. Over his 24 appearances at Triple-A this season, Backhus has logged a 2.22 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 36:10 K:BB across 24.1 innings.

Diamondbacks' Christian Montes De Oca: Sent back to Triple-A
The Diamondbacks optioned Montes De Oca to Triple-A Reno on Sunday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
As anticipated, De Oca was sent back to the minors after he served as the Diamondbacks' 27th man in Saturday's twin bill with the Reds. After the Reds and Diamondbacks concluded a suspended game from Friday earlier in the day, Montes De Oca made his MLB debut in the team's 13-1 loss. He tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in mop-up duty.

Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: On bench again Sunday
Moreno (hand) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.
Moreno is on the bench for a second straight day after he departed Friday's contest after being struck in the right hand by a wild pitch. The 25-year-old already had X-rays come back negative and should continue to be considered day-to-day, with Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona relaying that Moreno will be available to back up Jose Herrera on Sunday. Moreno could make his return to the starting nine as soon as the Diamondbacks' next game Monday versus the Mariners.

Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Roughed up for seven runs in loss
Nelson (2-2) took the loss against the Reds on Saturday, allowing seven runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three across three innings.
Nelson put the Diamondbacks in the hole right out of the gate after yielding five runs in the first inning, three of which came a Christian Encarnacion-Strand three-run homer. Nelson settled in to keep the Reds off the board over the next two frames, but he was pulled in the fourth and tagged for two more runs. It was a rough outing for the 27-year-old right-hander, who is looking to keep a permanent spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation with Corbin Burnes (elbow) scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery. Nelson will look to bounce back in his next start, tentatively slated for next weekend at home against the Padres.

Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Moved to 60-day IL
The Diamondbacks transferred Burnes (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Saturday.
The move allows the Diamondbacks to select Aramis Garcia's contract from Triple-A Reno. Burnes is set to undergo Tommy John surgery later this month, which will sideline him for the rest of the 2025 season and most, if not all, of 2026.

Diamondbacks' Cristian Mena: Lands on IL with shoulder injury
The Diamondbacks placed Mena on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a right shoulder strain.
Mena may have strained his right shoulder during Friday's suspended game against the Reds, when he gave up a walk and a solo home run while striking out one batter in one inning. Christian Montes De Oca has been appointed the 27th man for Saturday's contest, but it's unclear whether the Diamondbacks have another move in place to bolster their bullpen in the absence of Mena. Mena will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the injury and establish an estimated timeline for his return to the majors.

Diamondbacks' Christian Montes De Oca: Serving as 27th man
Montes De Oca will serve as the 27th man for the Diamondbacks in Saturday's game against the Reds.
With Friday's suspended game being finished Saturday, Montes De Oca has been brought in to replenish the Diamondbacks' bullpen, and an appearance in Saturday's game would mark the 25-year-old right-hander's major-league debut. Montes De Oca has 4.07 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, two saves and a 26:6 K:BB across 24.1 innings with Triple-A Reno this season.
